#1 NYT bestselling author Linda Lael Miller

This week’s contest winners are John Olenick and Jayne Jageler–congratulations to both of you.

A new round will begin on Monday, so everybody gets another chance.  :)

I fully intended to blog yesterday, but, for whatever reason, it just didn’t happen.  I wrote–I’m LOVING this new book–and played around with my art supplies and artist trading cards for a while.  I’m in a swap on Art42.org where the challenge is to make artist trading cards (ATCs) using only crayon, and it was a fascinating experiment.  I had Jenni dig out the big box of Crayolas I keep on hand for visiting children of the rambunctious persuasion, sat down, and started doodling.  I was surprised at how well the crayon blended, and the variety of colors has sure improved since  I was in kindergarten and elementary school–there are even some sparkly ones!  Yeegads, what fun!  For about an hour, I was six years old again, and it felt good.  It’s always good to try new things, methinks.  Hmmm…now I’m wondering what would happen if I used a heat gun to melt the wax after coloring a simple design…

That’s how I get into these crafty messes.  :)  I start wondering what would happen IF–the same as I do when I’m writing–and the next thing you know, I’m making DISCOVERIES–something I love, love, LOVE to do.  The discoveries don’t necessarily have to be successful–often, it’s just as helpful to find out what DOESN’T work, in a book OR in an art project.  Mistakes quite often lead to wonderful new ideas; it’s similar to the way potatoes sprout roots if you have them around long enough.  :)  Oh, yes.  Most of what I know, such as it is, was born of trying and failing, then trying again, and again.

In my case, at least, success (and it’s wonderful, I’m not denying that) was built on repeated failures, some spectacular, even glorious, but most simply ordinary, if not downright boring, prompting a deep sigh and a muttered, “Oh, well…”

It boils down to something my old daddy used to say: If you don’t quit, if you get up every time you’ve been knocked for a loop, if you’d rather die than back down, well, eventually, you’ll come out a winner.  And that’s classic cowboy wisdom if I’ve ever heard it.

As good a way to end a week as any, I guess.

Have a wonderful, restorative weekend, my friends.

Love your dad’s cowboy philosophy! What is the name of your new book? Do you know how many there will be yet? Blistering HOT & dry down here – way too brutal to ride, for me or my horse!! So looking forward to my favorite season – fall

Look at me doing a happy dance! Seriously this made my day. I received disappointing news from the doctors. I was down in the dumps as my Dad would say. So winning was a nice way to forget about things for a minute or two. Thank you Linda! Hope you have a great Labor Day weekend! Keep writing your awesome books. I love them! :-D

Congrats to the winners! Have a great weekend. There’s a little kid inside all of us. Not everyone is brave enough to let them out! It’s to bad we can’t rewind our memories like the vhs tapes to remember all the things our parents told/taught us! Tinna

Have a great coloring weekend Linda. If you color on paper (what else that sounds funny) you can lay it coloring side down on a piece of fabric and iron on the back side, the colring will transfer to the fabric. Interesting huh? Take care and have a wonderful weekend. Maybe someday I will win something.

How do you do it? I had to read it twice. I was thrilled to see
“Big Sky Wedding” at the store and when I got home stopped
reading everything else and started on your book. The other books can wait.
What a treasure you are and thank you for all that you write.
I know you’ve heard it before, but you really are the best and
absolutely no one compares to you.
    Keep writing, don’t ever stop.
Thank you! You’ve did a fantastic job on “Big Sky Wedding”.

I am reading a book of yours “Only Forever” I picked it up a couple of days ago. I always like to read each page from the beginning and see when each book was published. Well this book has a dedication and it says “there are only twelve steps to serenity” I do not have the book in front of me so forgive me if this is not exact. I just know that this quote brought me back to my roots with my dad and sharing his AA. He was sober for 14 years and I was so proud of him. Thank you Linda I miss him every day. And you just gave me a piece of him back.

Congratulations to John Olenick and Jayne Jageler. Enjoy your prize.

Linda, as I was reading your Blog, I thought to myself that I wondered what would happen if you melted the crayon colors a little, and low and behold, I read on, and you’d had the same thought.

They say great minds run in the same channel, but…I think I may have just stumbled in to the channel accidently.

I have several big boxes of crayons that I bought years ago because they were doing away with some color. I guess I figured if I bought them then, I’d always have that color, but…they aren’t doing ANYONE any good just sitting in the boxes in a drawer somewhere in this shack I call home. And, don’t even remember what color it was.

Linda thank you for each and every book that you have written. I was having a rough day working yesterday, and ended up stopping at a thrift store with a friend on my way home, I was wondering through the store and saw one of your books sitting on a housewares shelf and grabbed it like a lifeline! Reading it is going to be my relaxing therapy today. I know I will return to work on tomorrow in a good mood because I will have had a wonderful day strolling through the pages of my latest treasure! I love getting your new books but the bounty of locating one of the older books not currently available keeps me happy until you bless us with a new book!
Thank you for sharing the wisdom of your father… it reminds me of the wise words of my own mother Valine Campbell. Your books keep an important piece of mom alive in my heart. She loved getting your books and talking about growing up Deep Creek and Northport… Keeps my own memories of growing up there alive as well.
