Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women – 2009
The 2009 competition closed September 1, 2009.
Ten finalists have been chosen and notified for the 2009 Linda Lael Miller Scholarship Program. The winners will be announced by Dec. 15. Thank you to all who entered.
Information will be posted on the 2010 competition after January 1, 2010.
Official Rules:
- No purchase is necessary to apply.
- Apply by submitting an official application form, along with a 500-word maximum typed essay conveying:
- Why you are applying for a Linda Lael Miller Scholarship;
- The specific purpose for which you would use the funds;
- How achieving your educational goal(s) will enhance your future;
- The dollar amount you are seeking in a Linda Lael Miller scholarship.

- One application per person for the 2009 scholarships.
- Linda Lael Miller and Nancy Berland Public Relations, Inc., will not be responsible for lost, stolen, or misdirected mail, or applications that arrive after the specified deadline for entry.
- Number of scholarships and amounts: For the calendar year 2009, a total of $10,000 in scholarships will be awarded. The scholarship committee will determine the number of scholarships to be disbursed. All amounts are in U.S. dollars.
- A fund will be established in each recipient’s name. From this fund a check or checks will be issued by the Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women business manager directly to 1) the registrar or other appropriate official at the educational institution which the recipient will attend, 2) a bookstore for payment of textbooks, supplies and/or equipment required for classes, and/or 3) the accredited child care facility which the recipient’s child or children will attend while recipient is in school. If the recipient wants to use all or part of her scholarship for transportation expenses, the scholarship fund business manager will purchase pre-paid cards and provide these to the winner. The business manager will exercise final judgment regarding disbursement of a winner’s funds on expenses specified or any other expenses that a winner asks to be considered, and winners are to be bound by the business manager’s decision. The balance in a recipient’s fund not utilized for these specified expenses by December 31, 2010, will revert to the Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women fund for future scholarships.
- Deadline: Applications must be received by September 1, 2009 to be considered. Early entry is recommended. Finalists will be notified on or before October 30, 2009. Winners will be announced on or before December 15, 2009. Recipients’ funds will be activated after enrollment is verified.
- Judging criteria: Essays will be judged on readability, demonstration of commitment to applicant’s education/career and on the possible impact of the scholarship on the life of recipient, her family and/or her community.
- Contest open to females who are legal residents of the U.S. or Canada, and who are age 25 or older on 3/1/09. Linda reserves the right to make exceptions and award scholarships to applicants who are younger than 25. Void in Puerto Rico and wherever prohibited by law. Employees of Nancy Berland Public Relations, Inc., its subsidiaries and their families living in the same household are not eligible. Applications become the property of Linda Lael Miller and will not be returned. All applications must be the sole property of the applicant. Applications must be an original work of the applicant and must not have been previously published or have won any awards. Linda Lael Miller will own all rights to all applications received.
- Prizes are not transferable and may not be substituted. Prizes will be awarded. All federal, state and local taxes are the responsibility of the winners. Winners will be notified by mail and/or phone and may be required to execute and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Release within 15 days of attempted notification, or an alternate winner may be selected.
- For residents of Quebec, any litigation respecting the conduct and awarding of a prize in this scholarship competition may be submitted to the Regie des Loteries et Courses du Quebec.
- Winners grant to Linda Lael Miller the right to use their name, likeness, essay and application for any advertising, promotion and publicity purposes without further compensation to or permission from the winner, except where prohibited by law.
- By entering this contest, applicant agrees to release Linda Lael Miller, the business manager, Nancy Berland Public Relations, Inc. and their directors, employees, officers and agents, from any and all liability, loss or damages arising from, or in connection with, the judging of this contest, the decision to award scholarships, and the awarding, receipt, and/or use or misuse of prize. Applicant further agrees that any and all claims, disputes or actions arising out of or connected with this contest shall be resolved individually, without resort to class action, exclusively in a court of competent jurisdiction sitting in Spokane County, Washington.
- Names of winners will be posted on www.lindalaelmiller.com.
